Nevada State Senator Kelvin Atkinson Elected National Vice Chairman of the Council of State Governments

Las Vegas, NV- August of this year, Kelvin Atkinson, Nevada State Senator representing the 4th District, was elected National Vice Chairman of the Council of State Governments (CSG) at their Annual Conference in Anchorage, Alaska. Senator Atkinson was interviewed by the nominating committee of CSG West, which is made up of legislators from 13 western states. The position runs in a four year rotation: Vice Chairman in 2015, Chairman Elect in 2016, Chairman in 2017, and Immediate Past Chairman in 2018. Senator Atkinson is the first African American to be elected into this position.

“To be elected by a panel of my legislative colleagues from 13 different western states is a tremendous honor,” said Senator Atkinson. “I am humbled and gracious to be chosen for this leadership position with the Council of State Governments, and I plan on representing CSG and the State of Nevada well in the next four years.

” Senator Atkinson has a long history with CSG West, including serving as Chairman in 2013, where he held the annual conference in Las Vegas for the first time in the organization’s 66 year history. The Council of State Governments, a nonpartisan organization, serves all three branches of state government. Their goal is to foster “the exchange of insights and ideas to help state officials shape public policy.

Nevada State Senate Majority Leader Mo Denis said, “On behalf of the Nevada Senate Democrats, we are thrilled that Senator Atkinson has been elected into this prestigious chairmanship with CSG. Kelvin has proven time and again his commitment to working in a collaborative manner with leaders from other western states to exchange policy expertise and ideas relevant to our region. He brings a tremendous amount of pride to the Silver State.”
